Baird analyst upgrades Nike shares

PORTLAND, Ore. --

A Robert W. Baird & Co. analyst upgraded shares of Nike Friday on the belief that the world's largest shoe and apparel company could benefit from a weaker dollar.

Analyst Mitch Kummetz lifted his rating on Nike shares to "Outperform" from "Neutral," and raised his estimates for the 2010 and 2011 fiscal years.

While a stronger dollar has hurt Nike in recent quarters, as the company does much of its business abroad, the value of the dollar has dropped recently. Kummetz suggested in a research note that the weaker dollar could help boost Nike's 2010 sales outlook, although he said Nike's hedging strategy could limit its immediate earnings per share upside. But he said the trend could become more significant in the following years.

Most U.S. companies that sell goods internationally convert those sales from foreign currencies into dollars when they report financial results. If the dollar weakens against those currencies, the translation results in more dollars in revenue.

He also noted that Nike's athletic footwear remains popular and its brands continue to gain in marketshare during the recession - a strong sign for the Beaverton, Ore. based company's future.

Kummetz raised estimates for 2010 to $3.60 from $3.52 per share and for 2011 to $4.04 from $3.89. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expect, on average, Nike to earn $3.60 per share for 2010 and $3.98 per share for 2011.

The analyst also boosted his price target on Nike shares to $69 from $61. That price target implies upside of 19.9 percent over the stock's closing price Thursday.

Shares of Nike rose 51 cents to $58.03 in afternoon trading Friday.
